I am Dr Tushar Bhuta, a neonatologist and paediatrician practising in St Leonards on Sydney’s North Shore. For more than two decades I have had the privilege of caring for newborns and young children, many of whom arrive earlier or smaller than expected, and others who simply need a little extra guidance through the early years.
My medical journey began in Mumbai, where I completed my MBBS in 1984. After moving to Australia, I obtained my AMC certification and later the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) with subspecialty training in neonatal-perinatal medicine. Over the years I have also been awarded the degrees of MMed, MDI and MMA, but the qualifications that matter most to me are the trust families place in my team and the healthy smiles we see when children return for follow-up visits.
I currently serve as Head of Newborn Intensive Care at North Shore Private Hospital and as a senior neonatologist at the Mater Hospital, North Sydney. Day to day you will find me in the NICU looking after premature and critically ill newborns, rounding on the postnatal wards, or consulting in my rooms on Level 3 of North Shore Private. I am also a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney and remain actively involved in teaching medical students and paediatric trainees.
My approach has always been family-centred. I believe parents are the most important members of any care team, so I take time to explain diagnoses, investigations and treatment plans clearly and honestly. Whether it is complex neonatal resuscitation, management of extreme prematurity, infection, growth concerns or developmental follow-up, my goal is the same: to give every child the strongest possible start and every family the confidence they need.
Outside medicine I am a husband, father and, more recently, a proud grandfather. Those roles continually remind me why this work matters so deeply.
If your family needs support in the newborn period or beyond, my team and I are here to help.
