I am Dr Mark Johnson, a general practitioner and psychotherapist based in Hamilton, in the heart of south-west Victoria. For more than 25 years I have had the privilege of working with individuals and families across this region, first as a traditional GP and, over time, increasingly as a doctor whose primary focus is psychological medicine.
I completed my medical degree (MBBS with Honours) and, like most Australian-trained doctors of my era, began in hospital medicine before moving into rural general practice. Early in my career I recognised that many of the people walking through the door were carrying burdens that could not be fully addressed by physical examination or prescriptions alone. That realisation led me to train extensively in psychotherapy—first psychodynamic, then interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), in which I hold Level A certification. Today my practice sits at the intersection of general practice and psychiatry: I continue to provide the full scope of GP care while dedicating the majority of my clinical time to longer, therapeutic consultations for mood disorders, trauma, personality difficulties, and the quieter crises that so often accompany rural life.
I consult from rooms in Lonsdale Street, Hamilton, and offer telehealth appointments across Victoria and beyond. I am a Visiting Medical Officer at Hamilton Base Hospital, remain on the GP roster at Hamilton Medical Group, and for the past several years have served as Convenor of the Mental Health Curriculum at Deakin University’s School of Medicine, where I have the rewarding task of helping the next generation of rural doctors recognise and respond to psychological distress.
My approach is straightforward: I listen carefully, think integratively, and draw on whichever evidence-based tools—conversation, medication, or practical guidance—will be most helpful to the person in front of me. Men’s mental health, developmental and complex trauma, and the thoughtful use of medication in psychotherapy are particular interests, but I still see the whole spectrum of general-practice presentations; after all, the mind and body rarely arrive separately.
If you are looking for a doctor who has time to understand the deeper story behind your symptoms, I would be glad to help.
