About Of Dr Shaun McGrath
I’m Shaun McGrath. I work as a gynaecological oncologist and gynaecologist at Greenslopes Private Hospital in Brisbane.Most days I’m looking after women who’ve been told they might have cancer – ovarian, uterine, cervical, vulval, whatever it is – or who already know they do. I also see plenty of women with big fibroids, huge cysts, bad endometriosis, or women who carry BRCA genes and want their ovaries and tubes taken out before trouble starts.I went to medical school at UQ, did my intern and resident years at the Royal Brisbane, then trained in obstetrics and gynaecology around south-east Queensland. Got my fellowship (FRANZCOG) in 2017 and went straight into the gynaecological oncology training program. Spent two years down at the Mercy in Melbourne and came back for the last year with the Queensland Centre for Gynaecological Cancer. Finished that in 2021 and started as a consultant at the Mater while I built up my private rooms.This year (2025) I shifted everything across to Greenslopes because I like the theatre teams here and it’s a better fit for the sort of surgery I do – lots of laparoscopies and robotics.I still do a bit of teaching – senior lecturer at UQ, run tutorials for the med students, help supervise the registrars and the oncology fellows. Keeps me honest.When someone walks in, first thing I do is shut up and listen. Then I try to explain what’s going on without drowning them in jargon. Sometimes the best plan is an operation, sometimes it’s watch and wait, sometimes it’s “you’re absolutely fine, go home and enjoy life”. Whatever it is, I’ll tell you straight.Having cancer or facing a big operation is bloody scary.
