About Of Dr Sarah-Jane Spencer
I’m a psychiatrist based in Sydney with more than twenty years in medicine and twelve as a consultant here in Australia.I started out in the UK, did my medical degree between Cambridge and London, then worked in emergency departments, general medicine and psychiatry in the NHS before coming to Sydney in 2008. I finished my specialist training with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists in 2013 and became a Fellow that year. I still keep my UK Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and along the way I picked up a Master of Laws, a Master of Health Management from UNSW and a Certificate in Forensic Psychiatry.I see adults for pretty much anything that brings people to a psychiatrist: depression, anxiety, trauma, eating disorders, addiction, perinatal issues and the mental health side of infertility. I’ve kept a special interest in fertility-related psychiatry and continue to consult with FertilityPsych, helping individuals and couples through IVF and everything that comes with it.Day to day I work in private practice in the Inner West, have rooms at Ramsay Clinic Northside in St Leonards, and hold a public role as Deputy Clinical Director of Custodial Mental Health for Justice Health. Spending time in the prison system has sharpened the way I think about trauma, personality and risk, and I carry that experience into all my other work.People tend to say I’m straightforward, practical and don’t judge. I explain things clearly, lay out the realistic options, and we decide together what makes sense. Medication, therapy, lifestyle changes — whatever actually moves the needle for that person.I’m also a partner and a parent, so I know what it’s like when life outside the office is complicated too.If you’re looking for someone who will listen properly, tell it like it is, and work with you until things feel manageable again, feel free to get in touch.
