About Of Dr Patrick De Waal
I’m Patrick de Waal, an ear, nose and throat surgeon based in Coffs Harbour on the New South Wales Mid North Coast.I grew up in Cape Town and graduated from the University of Cape Town Medical School in 1992. After internship and community service I spent the next decade training in otolaryngology at Groote Schuur Hospital and Red Cross Children’s Hospital, qualifying as a specialist in 2002 (FCS ORL). For the following thirteen years I ran a busy private practice in Somerset West, while also doing regular outreach work in rural areas and teaching registrars. In 2004 I spent a year as a consultant in a large NHS hospital in Northern Ireland, which gave me valuable exposure to different health systems and surgical approaches.In 2017 my family and I made the move to Australia. I chose Coffs Harbour because it reminded me of the Cape – ocean on one side, mountains on the other, and a community that still looks after each other. After settling in, I completed the Australian assessments and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2018.Today I split my time between my rooms at ENT Coffs Coast on Albany Street and operating at Baringa Private Hospital and Coffs Harbour Health Campus. My practice covers the full range of adult and paediatric ENT: sinus and nasal surgery, ear surgery (including cochlear implantation and bone-conduction devices), snoring and sleep apnoea, voice disorders, salivary gland and thyroid surgery, and head and neck cancer work in collaboration with the regional multidisciplinary team.I’m a member of ASOHNS and keep up to date by regularly attending conferences in Australia and overseas. Outside of medicine I’m usually found in the surf, on a mountain bike, or trying (mostly failing) to keep my three teenagers in line.If you’ve been referred or are looking for a second opinion, my rooms are always happy to help.
